that some schools get, but the 10 or so Texas Tech fans that sit above the
dugout have been hilarious all weekend...." "I still like the Texas Tech group...." This column was written about us in the Daily Oklahoman during the 2001 Big XII Tourney Hecklers add good sport to Tech games This series of articles was written in February, 2001 about the Hecklers Tech Hecklers take opposing players out of games "Some of the best pitches thrown at Texas Tech's opponents come from the stands..." Snead more help to Tech when he's off the field "Chris Snead plays left for Texas Tech..." Is heckling bad sportsmanship? "At least one Big 12 Athletic Conference baseball coach thinks heckling is bad sportsmanship and shouldn't be a part of the game..." From spacecity.com: "In his 14 years at the school, Hayes (sic) has built a widely respected program that might have the best home field advantage in all of college baseball. In addition to the unpredictable weather, the Tech fans, led by the Tech Hecklers, often rattle the opposition into mistakes." (We consider this the ultimate compliment. However, it was written by someone in Houston who thinks our weather is "unpredictable" and can't spell H-A-Y-S.) The official Tech baseball page has a nice article about us. Click here to read it. From e-mail... ---- My sister-in-law is a Red Raider alum and she says your rebel yell is "Get your Guns Up!" I am a recent Tech graduate, class of '99, and just wanted to take this opportunity to say thanks! I went to about 85% of the home games while I was a student there and enjoyed all the games. I have just visited your site and read some of the articles, especially the one about USC weekend, and you are the reason why Tech baseball is so special at Tech. I have been to many collegiate games in my life, mainly in Houston and all the crowds are really the same; laid back, patient, not very loud unless a homerun is hit. Well, the Law is much the same with one exception - a few guys sitting next to the visitors section cracking everyone up and having a good time. Over the years I saw you guys at each home game no matter the time or weather. I also saw some spinoff hecklers my junior and senior years there (editor's note: Hecklers north), which is awesome. The more people who come to "experience" the Law, the more the tradition builds and the aura of Tech baseball grows. I saw and enjoyed every minute of the college playoffs at Houston, mainly because you guys were making me roll. ---- More to come.... Hecklers in the News Big12.net - Houston Regional Notebook - 5/28/00 "Their fans made it a lot of fun," (Princeton head coach Scott) Bradley said. "As the game went on, our kids really enjoyed the atmosphere even though we didn't have as many people in the stands as we did last night. The Texas Tech fans loosened us up and made us laugh and relax as much as anything." Lubbock Avalanche-Journal - Tech
baseball elicits envy from Trojans
- 2/13/00 "It's a great experience for our players," said (USC coach Mike) Gillespie, one of only two men to both play for a College World Series winner (USC, 1961) and coach one (USC, 1998). "We don't deal with this very often. We don't deal with this size of crowd or how electric it is. Hat's off to them for putting a program together and rallying behind it like these people do." "They don't get too personal, and they know what they're talking about," said (USC catcher Beau) Craig, .... "They know baseball. They pick up on little details.... I think the fans here are excellent. I don't think they're jerks. They're great baseball fans. And we would die to have those fans at our park." (Regarding Disch-Falk Field) "I like this place here more... At Texas, they're not jerks, but they're not that great. They're not good at it. A lot of them don't know what they're talking about, and a lot of them are obnoxious. Here, they're not obnoxious; they're funny. They know what they're talking about." Hecklers note: For the record, we gave Beau Craig a belated birthday party on Sunday after we read this column. We had party favors, cupcakes, and even sang Happy Birthday before Beau's first at-bat. About 100 Tech fans around our section signed a birthday card for Beau, too. The Red Raiders won that day, 20-7. Beau struck out his first two trips but later smoked two homeruns. Beau is now playing in the Oakland A's organization. Lubbock Avalanche-Journal - Red Raiders to host Aggies -
2/4/00 "It will be interesting this weekend in Lubbock," (New Mexico State coach Rocky) Ward said. "That's the unique thing about that group, they're loud and entertaining and they are good for the home crowd. But they are also very classy. It's hard to get that accomplished.... You want fans to be loud and rowdy and you want that continual pressure on opponents. But we never felt like they crossed the line and they gained some respect for us. They understand what the game is all about." Lubbock Avalanche-Journal - OU coach appreciates Heckler
card - early 1999 "That was such a nice gesture on their part, and I want to thank those guys personally for those good wishes." Amarillo Daily News - Buffs take bats to Tech for opener -
2/8/98 Gainesville Daily Register - Big 12 Baseball Tournament had
everything, even Hecklers - 5/19/97 "The talkative team, led by former Tech student Chris Snead, has been doing their thing at Red Raider games for years, but their reputation has really grown over the past couple of seasons. They are so popular in Lubbock now that a restaurant sponsors them." A TV interview with Chris Snead at Texas A&M in 1995. |
