2002 Letterwinners Reunion Weekend

Fifty former Texas Tech baseball letterwinners, with a few tubes of Ben Gay, got together on Sept. 20-21 for a weekend of events. The reunion, first of its kind in many years, was hosted by the Hecklers, Tech baseball's biggest fans.

Highlight of the event was a banquet Friday evening, paying tribute to Kal Segrist, Red Raider baseball head coach from 1968-83. Some 100 people were on hand as the Hecklers presented Segrist with an album containing letters and memories from four of his former SWC coaching peers plus several of his former players and assistants; lifetime season tickets for all home baseball games; and a scholarship to be given in his name to future Texas Tech students. 

Other events included a golf tournament held at Meadowbrook Golf Course, which was won by the foursome of Ryan Daly, Jason Totman, Neal Leonard and Randy DuRoss. A tour of the new Tech baseball facility was followed by infield and batting practice Friday night. A pre-game reception was held at the Frazier Pavillion, followed by the Texas Tech vs. North Carolina State football game.

Plans are to host a similar event next fall. 

"We are hoping for a football Saturday free of a last-minute game-time move for television, which is what happened this year," said Mike Gustafson, event coordinator and Hecklers member. "Kickoff was moved to 11:30 a.m. less than two weeks before the reunion. 

"In the spring of 2004, we plan to host a 50th reunion of the 1954 Red Raider baseball team, the first Tech team to play baseball since the program had been dropped in the late '20s," Gustafson said. "We'd appreciate everyone's help in spreading the word about the baseball reunions and providing us with names and addresses of former players."
